With a simpler form of the Red Ring, Xbox’s show LEDs 3 and 4. This means your console is overheating. And yes, this means you have got to end your marathon Assassin’s Creed session—step one is always turning the 360 off. Once off, just let it sit and cool for a few hours.

There are certain things you shouldn’t do with this form of the red ring–Xbox scuba diving, for instance.  Do NOT, under any circumstance, attempt to speed this process by submerging your Xbox in water, or lathering it with ketchup, or anything common sense ought to slap you for thinking. But also, do not put the system in an adversely cold location either. This could make your problems much worse. Such extremes in temperature may cause the motherboard to bend or buckle, and could cause connections to break between components. Further, it is possible condensation could form from the cold air, and short out the Xbox. Really, let its fans do the cooling.

As you sit, waiting in anticipation, you could put your nervous energy to good use. Make sure the Xbox’s ventilation openings are not obstructed in any way. You should probably move the console off your grandma’s quilt for this reason. Additionally, make sure airflow to the 360 is possible and that it is not in a particularly hot location—the stove top, under your dog, or in Ecuador for instance.

If anyone is feeling proactive, it is possible to make the console’s cooling more efficient by replacing and/or improving the thermal compound inside your Xbox 360. This is actually not as hard as it may sound, and would prevent this problem from happening again.
