Xbox 360 Freezing

Hello all,

These consoles are powerful and smooth machines, but sometimes with the Xbox 360, freezing is an issue. Like when you really don’t want to be interrupted from playing GTA IV, for instance.

Xbox 360 freezing can be the result of a number of different causes; but since freezing is a very common symptom, it takes a bit of effort to diagnose where it is coming from, and what is to blame. And with that information, hopefully the problem can be resolved, and game-time will be back in session.

The first thing to do is the tried and true, multipurpose solution—no, don’t kick your Xbox, restart it. If this was the first time you’ve had Xbox 360 freezing issues, the problem is likely to go away without much fuss just by doing that. Even if it has been freezing a few times recently, this should take care of it. A one-time lock is just an annoyance, the real problems start when, with your Xbox 360, freezing is consistent or you cannot navigate out of it.

Please note: if a certain game you are trying to play, Prince of Persia for instance, keeps freezing up as you approach the final boss, or any specific location for that matter; the problem is much more likely to be with the game itself than the Xbox.

-If the problem is in fact with the game, when it locks up next, you should still be able to hit that big button in the center of the controller and go to the Dashboard.

-Also, you could just check if other discs are freezing in your 360, or if that specific disc will freeze in a friend’s Xbox.

If you determine, through thorough testing, that there is just something up with that disc, I’d recommend cleaning it with a silk cloth. If you are in college and do not have fine Chinese silk on hand, any soft fabric will do equally fine. Additionally, you can try loading the game onto the Xbox’s hard drive, and playing it from there.

Now, if you are not that lucky…

Xbox 360 freezing could be the result of something funky on the Xbox’s cache, or a CPU/GPU malfunction, or possibly your internet connection.

The cache is easier to fix, so I’ll tackle that first. To see if this may be the problem, run you Xbox without the hard drive connected. If the freezing persists, this is not your problem. If it does not, however, it may well be.

To clear the cache, follow these instructions:

• Reconnect your hard drive, and turn on the console.

• Go to the Dashboard, and find the “System” section.

• Pick “Memory,” then hit Y to see “Device Options.”

• Press on your controller, in this order, X X Lb Rb X X.

• Hit A if it asks something about system maintenance.

If you notice that this freezing trend is only happening During your epic Live battles, there might actually be some concern with your internet. Though, from my experience, that rarely causes Xbox 360 freezing.

Finally, your Xbox 360 freezing could be the visual manifestation of an issue lurking inside the very hardware of your beloved console. If there are faulty connections or overheating in the Graphic Processing Unit, the system freezing up would be a very likely result. To fix this, you would have to go in and either improve the heat sink, or tighten the connections to the motherboard.

This sounds intimidating, but it is not that bad. If your freezing issues are coming from this type of problem, they will not go away otherwise. Most importantly, don’t simply write off your Xbox as busted. That’s crazytalk! There is always a solution, and it is totally within your power to go fix it.
